Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship program pairs several master folk artists with novices hoping to learn their skills. At the end of the year’s training, they all come together for a free daylong festival.
In previous years, the showcase event’s program did little to illuminate the folk artists or their apprentices. Virginia Humanities, the program’s organizer, wanted materials that would fit their new branding and appeal to families.
Rather than trying to fit all the artist profiles into one cookie-cutter layout, I instead developed a layout and typographic system that let each page’s design flow naturally from the provided text and image. A secondary goal was to create each page in such a way that the artists would be proud to frame it.
